We produce a range of professional quality compact triaxial magnetic field meters for the measurement of magnetic fields produced by alternating current (AC) in circuits delivering electric power. We produce the HMI -1 EMF meter, a handheld triaxial magnetic field meter for the measurement of AC magnetic fields from electric power lines, underground cables, electricity substations and commercial and domestic electrical equipment. The HMI -1 EMF meter is capable of measuring magnetic fields up to 6000 milliGauss (mG). The HMI -1 EMF meter is used for EMF monitoring by organisations including electric power utilities, OHS groups and EMF consultants. We also produce a high field version of the HMI -1 EMF meter, capable of measuring magnetic fields up to 120 Gauss. In addition we produce the HMI -2 harmonic field meter, which analyses the harmonic frequency content of the magnetic field. This harmonic field content indicates the harmonic content of the current producing the field and is useful for engineers working with power quality. The HMI -2 measures all the odd numbered harmonics of the fundamental up to the eleventh harmonic, i.e. 550 Hz in a 50 Hz system. HMI Systems is an Australian business, based in Melbourne, Australia. Meters for measuring magnetic fields are often
referred to as EMF meters or magnetic field meters, but
are sometimes called Gauss meters or milliGauss meters or
Tesla meters or EMR meters or magnetic flux meters.
The HMI -1 EMF meter is a small, 120mm x 60mm x 25mm ( 4.7" X 2.4" X 1"), self-contained handheld triaxial instrument for measuring power frequency magnetic fields. This magnetic field meter has a number of useful features: 1. Simultaneously displays true RMS magnetic flux density in three axes and resultant. The simultaneous display of the three axial components of the field is useful for determining the direction of the field. This can be useful for locating the source of a magnetic field and in particular for locating and determining the orientation of buried cables. 2. Autoranges between
three measurement ranges:
3. Performs a harmonic analysis and
simultaneously displays the following field quantities: ·
broadband RMS ·
totality of fundamental + power harmonics ·
fundamental ( 50 Hz ) frequency component ( 60 Hz
version also available ) ·
third harmonic ( 150 Hz ) frequency component The harmonic content of the field can be used to help identify the source. In addition, the harmonic analysis feature of the HMI -1 magnetic field meter can be used to indicate the presence of undesirable harmonic currents. 4. Calculates statistics of broadband magnetic
field readings since switch on: ·
Min, Max of broadband RMS field values ·
Mean and Standard Deviation of broadband RMS field
values ·
Records percentage of broadband RMS field values in
eight ranges:
·
Elapsed time since switch-on This facility enables the HMI -1 magnetic field meter
to be used as a personal dosimeter for EMF . While
switched on, the meter is carried e.g. in a shirt pocket
and at the end of an allotted time, the main parameters
of the magnetic field exposure to that time can be
determined. This approach is extremely convenient and
reliable.
The regular (6000 mG) HMI -1 EMF meter
is priced at $1500 AUD + post and packaging + GST (a GST
of 10% applies only for purchases in Australia ). For a

The HMI -2 harmonic field meter is a specialised instrument for measuring harmonics present in the magnetic field. The HMI -2 calculates and displays the rms values of all odd numbered harmonic field components up to the eleventh, that is in a 50 Hz system: 50 Hz, 150 Hz, 250 Hz, 350 Hz, 450 Hz, 550 Hz.
